The boutonniere dates back to Egyptians and Aztecs, who wore flowers to indicate who they supported in events. During the 15th century, to gesture good luck on a knight a flower would be given by a maiden. The English wars saw the start of men wearing boutonnieres.
The appeal of boutonnieres, or lapel adornments, grew in the early 19th century, with the wearing of coats that folded at the top and had a buttonhole. Men would wear flowers as part of their business suit to work.
